Dear Parents, School Administration and Staff:

District Health Department #10 (DHD #10) is working with your local schools to help prevent the spread of the H1N1 Influenza virus (Swine Flu).   As you may have heard we currently have probable cases in our area and we are actively responding to the situation.   According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC), school closures are not advised at this time.  Most U.S. cases have not been severe and are comparable to seasonal flu.  CDC, local and state health officials will continue to closely monitor the severity and spread of this H1N1Flu outbreak

Acting on current information from the CDC, DHD #10 recommendations for parents, school administration and staff are;

·   Parents and guardians should monitor their school-aged children for symptoms of influenza-like illness and faculty and staff should self monitor every morning for symptoms of influenza-like illness.
·
Influenza-like illness symptoms include headache, fever, sore throat, body aches, and non-productive cough. It is possible that your child could have these symptoms and not have H1N1 flu, but it is important to follow the recommendations to help stop the spread of illness to others.
·
Students, faculty and staff members who appear to have influenza-like illness at arrival or become ill during the school day should be isolated promptly in a room separate room other students and sent home.
·
Students, faculty and staff members with influenza-like illness should stay home and not attend school or go into the community, except to seek medical care, for at least 7 days even if symptoms resolve sooner.
·   Students, faculty and staff members who are still sick after 7 days, should continue to stay home from school for at least 24 hours after symptoms are gone.
·
Ill students should not attend alternative child care or other group gatherings.
·   School administrators should communicate regularly with the health department to obtain guidance about reporting influenza-like illnesses in the school.

There is no vaccine available at this time, so it is important for parents to take steps to prevent the spreading of the virus to others. You and your children should:

· Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
·
Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough and sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
·
Avoid close contact with sick people.
·
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
· If you or your child is sick, stay home.
